Jurnalul fericiri
(fragment) Un pahar? N-am spart nici un pahar... Nu ţin minte... Acesta mi-e răspunsul... şi cu adevărat nu ţin minte. Sau totuşi l-am spart? în August, de ziua ei şi a mea? Sau nu l-am spart? Nu ştiu. Ba da, ştiu. Desigur că l-am spart. In August, seara, la masă, uşile înspre terasă larg deschise. Asta nu-i ea. Inaccesibile. Calea-i barată definitiv. Ce-are a face dacă l-am spart sau nu? Are. Ceva îmi spune stăruitor ca are. |
The Journal of Joy
(excerpt) “A glass?” I didn’t break a glass…I don’t remember… That’s my answer… and I honestly don’t remember. Or did I break it after all? In August, on her birthday and mine? Or did I not break it? I don’t know. Yes, I know. I definitely broke it. In August, in the evening, at the table, the doors facing the café wide open. But at the same time, it’s as if I can’t remember. I remember, and I don’t remember. Everything in this unreal and subtle décor, cooked up with care, compels me to seek refuge in confusion and to lose myself in unease: and her looks, warm and sympathetic, and their looks, clever and apathetic. The swing of consent shows up before me: I have no choice but to let myself slide. I could swear that I don’t remember –- in absolute good faith –- even though I realize that that’s how things happened, the way she repeats them –- a beautiful crystal glass –- with the precision of a computer’s memory, with the faithfulness of a tape-recorder, with the hypocritical shyness of a bright student who knows the lesson too well. I look at her –- it’s her, but as in the dream she does unexpected things, she speaks differently; and in synchronicity with her even the world is different, it’s surreal. Behold, this is surrealism: objects, though the same, take on a different mood, have another kind of sense of purpose. It wants to say: this too is possible. Now, yes, the kettle is a woman, the stove is an elephant…Max Ernst, Dalí, Duchamp… but Munch’s Scream also, I want to scream, to wake up from the nightmare, to return to our old, good and gentle land, where, well-behaved, things are as we know them to be and answer to the purposes we have always given them…. I want to get out of this uneasy city of Delvaux, from this field of Tanguy with split limbs, soft and re-assembled according to bizarre analogies, to pairings other than ones we have settled where we are, aground. Here there can be no land. This is not her. This Dostoievskian and expressionist décor can’t be real… I’m lying to myself, I’m being proud, I’m giving myself airs, I’m imagining this delirious scene out of love of a role that I’d like to play… At the end of the day I don’t really know whether I broke it or not. Crystal, thick. If I admit I broke it, I tell the truth (the objective truth) and, as soon as I’ve spoken the truth, I have to go forward and admit that Nego really did speak spitefully (that’s the whole purpose of this nocturnal summons, wherein she defends me with suspicious care, amicably extends the pole of salvation; because she, ever-ready to remember and incapable of forgetting a detail, look, she goes out of her way when anything has to do with me and my words, and then she’s either quiet about them or she paraphrases them in a truncated manner and answers: “Who told them? I can’t remember. Someone from those in attendance knows this much only: that they were pronounced.” This impersonal and neutral “they were,” as in logic and in structuralism, is an accomplice to my name, and it lowers me.) So, speaking, I enter into clarity and truth, and there’s no hollow to hide in, I tread into a zone of light; the hidden spots disappear instantly. Or, if I don’t remember, if I make a psychological gesture of relaxation, I lose myself in the smoke of confusion, I get lost in the forgetfulness of non-remembrance, I give myself over to the sweet delirium of evanescence and then I admit it again, I admit it because now everything is my equal, because everything is ash-like and alike, because nothing has meaning or precision. I go into the world of the new novel and of literature without characters: of “IT” and “THEM” and “OTHERS” where the “I” and the “SELF” perish, confounded in undifferentiated multiplicity. Personality (what’s that?) churns into bits, crumbles, passes through a sieve in its entirety. Whatever I do, I’m lost. You’re lost, you’re lost; the comfortable rocking chair of giving-up and tiredness swings me to and fro, that of disgust, of amazement, of ungrateful friendship (she does only everything she can do. She wants to help me. On the sides of the crystal the candles sparkle on the festive table.) I’m also lost because this had to be my fate –- this, not something else. Am I not perhaps foul, a failure, old in concessions and giving-up, in shamed hands, in grotesque sorrows, in explosions of envy bleeding over with pride, ever-watchful in their hunger, satisfied but never sumptuously or wholly, ever crippled; isn’t my natural place among dirty things, among the lukewarm, in this restful cesspool of renunciation and submission, confirming the true truth; is this not the logical end of old purulence? To what end shall I disappoint myself on the long road of pride and dignity? Inaccessible. The road is definitively closed. What does it matter whether I broke it or not? It does. Something tells me earnestly that it does. Earnestly, but in undertones. I understand too well –- better and better as the long confrontation goes onward with tight gloves –- that the decision is to be made now, that from here on out everything will transpire. And the devilish thing about is that however I twist it I’m still stuck in the trap. Whether on the path of truth or sliding into the fog of vanity –- I’m lost either way, I have to admit it. This is it: that it invite me more dizzyingly, with greater pitilessness, toward the way of non-remembrance, the way of confusion, where all things are equal and lacking in sense, in importance. I am lost! - trans. Paul Boboc |
